Speculative Fiction Writer

A. J. Hodges is a writer and literary editor and translator (from Croatian) based near Edinburgh, Scotland. They love writing character-driven speculative fiction with horror, weird, or thriller elements, and their work has been published by Foofaraw and Asymptote Journal, and Relations. They won an honorable mention in Foofaraw's 2025 An Ordinary Contest and were longlisted for the 2024 John Dryden Translation Competition.

Fiction

​#EcofantasyWIP: I'm currently revising I Choose the Forest, a chemical and ecological fantasy thriller that draws on my interests in ecology, social justice, gender, and the ultras subculture.

#UltrasWIP: I'm currently working on a queer magical realist novel about ultras fans in Glasgow, Scotland, and Zagreb, Croatia.

"In Between" for Relations: Novel extract I translated from Croatian. Original by Kristina Gavran. It made the longlist in the John Dryden Translation Competition.

"Silver Threads and Golden Webs": Short story for the Wellspring psychotherapy and counselling center, republished on Medium.

Cultural Anthropology

 

I've published numerous academic books and articles, mostly during the 2010s. If you want to learn more about my articles, check out my ResearchGate and Google Scholar profiles.

 

I've published a piece called "Croatia: Against Modern Football" in Red Pepper magazine, and my research has featured in articles written for leading Croatian and UK newspapers. I have discussed my research on national television in Australia on the show Matter of Fact with Stan Grant.

 

I've published two monographs. I'm best known for Fan Politics, Protest, and Activism: Ultras in Post-Socialist Croatia (Routledge, 2019).

 

I coauthored In the Storms of Transformation: Two Shipyards between Socialism and the EU (University of Toronto Press, 2025).
