FAQ

Hiring an editor is a significant step to take as an author, and you may have questions about my process, timelines, approach, etc. I've answered several questions below. If you don't see what you need, just send me an email.

FAQ

You're based in the UK, but I'm not. Is that a problem?

No! I usually invoice in GBP but work regularly with authors all over Europe and North America in particular. I'm also happy to quote in USD if you prefer. Payments can be made easily by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay – this is handled securely through my invoicing system.

What are your rates, and how are they set?

My prices for developmental editing are straightforward and listed on the relevant service pages. For line or copyediting, I’ll ask for your total word count, genre and a short writing sample so I can provide an accurate quote. For first-time authors or new collaborations, my line/copyediting rate includes a full read-through of the manuscript before editing begins. This allows me to understand voice, structure, style, and flag chapters or manuscripts not ready for copyediting. As a result, subsequent projects or later-stage work are often quoted at a lower rate. My fees sit toward the upper end of the Editorial Freelancers Association rate chart averages and are typically around 20% above the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading suggested minimums for developmental and line editing. This reflects the depth of feedback and level of involvement I provide. If you are self-funding and my standard rates would present a genuine difficulty, you’re welcome to get in touch. When possible, I can offer limited flexibility or recommend a trusted editor who may be a better fit for your budget.

What accommodations can you make for neurodivergent authors if needed?

Many authors in the speculative fiction space are neurodivergent. I actively welcome neurodivergent writers, including autistic, ADHD, dyslexic and otherwise neurodivergent authors. As an editor, I have completed training in assisting neurodivergent writers through the editing and publishing process. My editorial process is flexible, and I will adapt it where possible to your needs. Examples include: clear written briefs and expectations, structured editorial letters with headings and summaries, optional bullet-point action plans to reduce overwhelm, transparent timelines, and online meetings tailored to suit your needs (e.g., camera optional, no pressure for small talk, or an email back-and-forth instead of a Zoom call.)

Can you start work on my manuscript ASAP?

I typically book around three months in advance, so I recommend getting in touch early to secure a slot. Shorter services — such as query package reviews or short story/first 10,000-word edits — can sometimes be scheduled at shorter notice, with an approximate two-week turnaround. Occasionally, projects shift and earlier availability opens up. If you’re working to a hard deadline, do let me know and I’ll always see what’s possible.

Do you do sample edits?

I don’t offer sample edits for developmental editing. Developmental work is holistic and works best when I can engage with the manuscript as a whole. However, you’re very welcome to begin with a shorter project—such as a single chapter or short story—if you’d like to test the waters before committing to a full manuscript edit. For line or copyediting, I usually return a short edited sample after my initial read-through so you can see how I approach the text. If you would prefer to book a standalone sample edit before committing, I offer a 2,000-word edit for £60. This fee is deducted from the full project cost if you decide to proceed. Alternatively, you’re welcome to book an initial consultation to discuss your project and see whether we’re a good fit.

Do you offer payment plans?

Shame-free, no-interest payment plans are readily available for anyone self-funding. I can split payment for editorial services into two, four, or six payments, spread monthly. I must have received 50% of the payments before delivering the edit.
