Speculative Fiction Developmental Editing

Are you looking for an editorial assessment or a full developmental edit of your novel?

A full developmental edit is a really useful learning tool if you're starting out in a fresh genre or want to take your skills up a notch. It's a course in fiction writing craft and technique, with your novel as the example text.

For more experienced novelists, I usually recommend an editorial assessment instead.

Full Developmental Edit

This is a detailed review of your manuscript's strengths and weaknesses, based on two readings, first as a regular reader, and then a slow reading, where I mark it up with manuscript comments.

You receive:

  • A detailed editorial report (typically 3,000 to 4,000 words)

  • Detailed manuscript comments (typically one per page)

  • A one-hour feedback call

  • A content summary with notes on scenes

  • A suggested revision plan for your novel

  • Worksheets with activities to complete

Not sure what a developmental edit entails? Read this blog post.

Cost: £25 / $33 per 1000 words

A 70,000-word novel would cost £1750 ($2380)

Coached Editorial Assessment

An editorial assessment is a solid first step—and for many people, it's all they need. The coached version is the most affordable option available.

I read your novel once and deliver editorial feedback as notes (typically four to six pages) and on a one-hour feedback call.

£150 + £60 per 10,000 words

A 70,000-word novel would cost £570 (approx. $680)

Editorial Assessment

If you want a short report of around 1500 words instead of a call, this service costs:

£250 + £60 per 10,000 words

A 70,000-word novel would cost £670 (approx. $920)

I can also quote in EUR or USD.

You can also purchase this service as an add-on after a manuscript critique or coached critique. I discount the cost of the original service from the total cost of the developmental edit.

Testimonials

"The biggest value I received from Andy was in the way he helped me to deepen my entire story. He showed me where beats or characterizations I took for granted had gaps to a reader, or raised questions I hadn't considered."

—Robert Winter, Queer Romantasy Author

"Working with Andy made my debut novel better, and the results in distribution and reviews prove it."

Nathan Wagner, Speculative Fiction Author

"Andrew's editing was of the highest standard. I learned a lot about the process from him and felt confident my manuscript was in good hands. It was a rewarding experience I hope to repeat soon."
